Blink – Character Design

“Blink” Protag

below are my contributions to the protagonist “blink”

Since Blink has so many mixed media animations/works, I had the idea to have the protagonist be made up of a paper collage of sorts. I cut up some magazines and stuck together the pieces to make some… creatures.

I thought it would be fun if the face was made up of different shapes and pieces, we could create some fun expressions.

some initial designs and colour tests:

In conclusion, ‘blink’ is a super colourful, unhinged, mixed media creature 🙂

After showing these designs to my group we discussed our favourites and handed off our ideas to Jada (one of our 2D artists/animators) to complete a final design and assets.

Enemy/Boss

Continuing the mixed media theme, we decided the ‘enemy’ should be in stop motion!

The page on the left shows that initial creepy monster idea before we got that feedback from Nicola to make it less ‘evil’. I took this feedback and had the idea that the boss would be ‘unfinished’ or ‘exposed’ on the bottom half hiding behind their desk. Much like in online meetings when you put a shirt on but stay in your pyjama bottoms. This makes the character less menacing.

Carrying on the office theme, I decided on the bottom half being like an office chair, the character wheeling around. This would also prove to be helpful when making the stop motion puppet – no legs!

FINAL DESIGN

The boss hides behind their desk, intimidatingly looming over the office. Their screen/face displays their emotions and thoughts; happy, error, sleep mode and spews out corporate buzzwords.
